Network geolocation

Because damaging underground networks may be a serious hazard, several prescribed rules are being established to control building works near certain underground, underwater or overhead structures (transport or distribution) in France. Amongst these rules, drawn upon existing rules or bills, is the creation of a one-stop service, where all service providers have to go to before building works. Another provision is the regulation as regards to the Déclaration de Projet de Travaux (Statement of works project) and the Déclaration d’Intention de Commencement de Travaux (Declaration of intent to begin works).

Eventually, the application of provisions will extend network geolocation to the whole French territory in order to safely go on with works. Geolocation will only be done by certified service providers under the control of the state.

Geolocation methods draw upon existing documents, visual scouting on site, GPR detection for underground structures, geometric readings. Results are then copied on digitised cartographic material (Autocad…), supplementing or modifying existing material.
